As you all know, I enjoy writing about health but, being the economist that I am, what really interests me is macroeconomics. This being so, I would like to share with you my column which was recently published in the journal The Economist Valencian Community, whom I would like to thank for their interest in my work. Space in publications is a highly sought after commodity. In this column I allude to complying with the public deficit commitments. Spain has made a commitment to Europe and I find it very disturbing that the European Union has warned the country about non-compliance. In order to achieve healthy growth, a strong foundation is necessary across all the variables of macroeconomics. These are my thoughts.

Un aviso desde Europa
Como todos sabéis me gusta escribir sobre sanidad pero, como economista que soy, me entusiasma la macroeconomía. Por esa razón, me gustaría compartir con vosotros la columna que he publicado recientemente en la revista El Economista Comunidad Valenciana, a quien agradezco que haya querido contar con mi firma. El espacio en los periódicos es complicado. En ella, hago alusión al cumplimiento del déficit público. España tiene un compromiso ante Europa y me parece muy preocupante que la Unión Europea nos haya advertido sobre el no cumplimiento pues, para tener un crecimiento sano, es necesario tener una buena base de todas las variables macroeconómicas. Esta es mi reflexión.
La sostenibilidad de los sistemas sanitarios preocupa a la OCDE
Para los que leen este blog, no es ninguna novedad que me haga eco de informes internacionales que alertan sobre los problemas de sostenibilidad a los que se tendrá que enfrentar nuestro sistema sanitario en un futuro. Esta vez es la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económico (OCDE) la que ha emitido un informe en el que expone su preocupación para las próximas décadas, “a menos que los gobiernos consigan contener los costes” y realicen profundas reformas.
Sustainability of healthcare systems is a cause for concern to the OECD
For readers of this blog, it will come as no surprise that I echo the findings of international reports which raise concerns about sustainability problems which our healthcare systems will have to face in the future. This time it is the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) which has produced a report detailing its concerns for the coming decades «unless governments manage to contain costs» and undertake serious reforms.

Imagínate un país con la sanidad descentralizada a las regiones. Imagínate un país en el que el 40% del gasto del presupuesto del gobierno regional sea gasto sanitario. Imagínate un país en el que el crecimiento del gasto sanitario sea superior al crecimiento del PIB en los últimos 15 años. Imagínate un país en el que la deuda pública de las regiones sea muy elevada en proporción a la deuda nacional. Después de leer esto seguro que pensarías que este país es España, pues no, este país es Canadá.

Imagine a country where health expenditure growth exceeds the GDP over the last 15 years. Imagine a country where the public debt of the regions is the highest in the world. After reading this paragraph you’re probably thinking that this country is Spain, but no, this country is Canadá.
Las reflexiones de Jeremy Hunt
Hoy me gustaría compartir mi espacio de opinión con el Secretario de Estado para la Salud de Reino Unido, Jeremy Hunt, quien recientemente, en una jornada en Londres, ha hablado sobre la colaboración público privada en el sector sanitario poniendo como ejemplo práctico y ejemplo de éxito el modelo desarrollado por Ribera Salud. A continuación, puedes leer las referencias que hizo en su discurso a nuestro modelo de gestión:

Jeremy Hunt’s thoughts
Today I would like to give up my blog to the UK’s Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, who has talked about our Model in a national event in London. You can find here a brief summary of his speech talking about Ribera’s health model:

The challenge of aging and chronicity
This week I was in Madrid attending the ‘To Your Health’ awards, which every year brings together, at the headquarters of the «La Razon» newspaper, those organizations and professionals with the biggest pulling power in the sector. This year I also went to collect an award, as happened in 2013, when the work in our Plan for the Promotion and Prevention of Health in our Care Integration Model was recognized. This time, the award went to our Chronic Patient Care Plan, which our group is working on to try to meet the needs of the citizens of the XXI century, addressing the needs of people at all stages of their life and with an effective coordination and integration care model.
According to the Basic Demographic Indicators published this week by the National Statistics Institute, beyond the age of 65 it is probable that we will live for another 21.2 years (19.1 for men and 23 for women). This means that when a citizen retires, they can look forward to living up to the age of 86 years old. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but it seems that we are on the right track, as the Professor of Health Economics and Public Policy at the University of California-Berkeley (USA), Richard Scheffler, declared.
El reto del envejecimiento y la cronicidad
Esta semana estuve en Madrid en la entrega de los premios ‘A Tu Salud’ que cada año reúne en la sede de La Razón a organizaciones y profesionales del sector con un gran poder de convocatoria. Y este año además, asistía para recoger un Premio, como ya ocurriera en 2013, cuando se reconoció la labor del Plan de Promoción y Prevención de la Salud de nuestro Modelo de Integración Asistencial. En esta ocasión, el premio ha sido para el Plan de Atención a Pacientes Crónicos, con el que desde nuestro grupo intentamos dar respuesta a las necesidades de la población del siglo XXI, atendiendo las necesidades de las personas en todas las etapas de su vida y con un modelo de coordinación e integración asistencial efectiva.
Según los Indicadores Demográficos Básicos que ha publicado esta semana el INE, a partir de los 65 años es probable vivir otros 21,2 años (19,1 en hombres y 23 en mujeres). Esto quiere decir que, cuando un ciudadano se jubila, su vida media futura tiene un recorrido de hasta al menos 86 años. Tenemos mucho trabajo por delante, pero parece que vamos por el buen camino, según ha declarado el catedrático de Economía de la Salud y Política Pública de la Universidad de California-Berkeley (Estados Unidos), Richard Scheffler.
